Introducing Nigel Calvert Glass - Crafted in Stroud:
Embark on a journey into the world of Nigel Calvert Glass, where artistry converges with the essence of Stroud's rich creative tapestry. My artistic narrative began in the corridors of academia, where my college was intimately connected to the Central School of Art by a cascade of natural light. As I navigated the challenges of academic study, an alternate world awaited on the other side of the corridor—an antithesis of experimentation with watercolor, ceramics, and performance.
From the initial stages where my glass concepts take shape as chalk sketches on the studio floor, a transformative process ensues, ushering in a bloom of mass and color. It's a real-time reward, a dance between the extraordinary and the mundane, characteristic of all improvised art forms.
In the crucible of creation, I've learned that molten glass possesses both form and memory. While I mold it with intention, it assumes a life of its own from the very outset—an inherent quality that I strive to enhance and exhibit in every piece.
Now situated in the heart of Stroud, my studio has become a haven where my wife and I have immersed ourselves in the vibrant and down-to-earth arts and crafts scene. Nestled on the village's edge, our space offers a panoramic spectacle overlooking the confluence of Toadsmoor and other streams, embraced by the sharp forested valley sides and the distant allure of Lypiatt Manor.
Beyond its rural charm, Stroud is a haven for craftspeople utilizing old mills as workshops, and I've had the privilege of collaborating with some, fabricating special stamps and hangers for my creations. This year, the spotlight has found its way to my work, thanks to Country Life's feature on Cotswolds Artists.
Discover the captivating allure of Nigel Calvert Glass - where every piece is a testament to the harmonious dance between creativity, nature, and the thriving arts community that breathes life into my craft.
